Chapter Seven

The crews worked hard; it appeared they played hard too. Smoke spiraled from BBQ pits near the lodge’s parking lot, adding to the already murky haze surrounding them. Although it was clearer than it had been the day before. A wind shift forcing the fires in opposite directions appeared to be cause for celebration. Eartha had heard firemen talking. Relief clear in their faces and voices that the two infernos might not meet. Plans were working. The way the jumpers cleared the areas and started counter fires left no fuel for the blazes. A large storm was predicted and that would be their saving grace. Enough water to put the fires out at once. Just the possibility of good luck circumventing disaster was cause to celebrate, even if she thought it might be too soon. After all, the storm hadn’t happened yet and the wind could change–again.

She jumped out the backseat and twisted to wave at the guys who gave her a ride. Her bed was calling, and she had no intention of missing it. Slowly she trudged up the stairs, stepped on the landing and stopped. Mac stood in front of her, his hair damp and the shirt he wore stretched across a muscular chest, faded jeans tucked into work boots at his ankles completed his appearance.

“You look tired.” He dipped, invading her space, and getting close to her face.

She was tired. Working with the firefighters was nothing like attending to the elderly in the retirement home. At her previous job, she only had to keep them entertained and make sure they took their meds. A cakewalk compared to what she did now, but what she was doing felt so much more gratifying. The first aid kits that the crews kept with them; it was her job to make sure they were always up to date. Those bags she put together could mean life or death to someone. Doctors from the local hospital didn’t always make it to their shift, so she was the only medical staff there consistently. Her duties were constantly growing, and she was learning. The few days she’d been to work were not dull. She was gaining hand’s on experience that would go with her wherever she went after this job was over.

“Earth to Eartha...” Mac chuckled.

“I am tired, but it’s a good fatigue.” She smiled. “Looks like you guys are gearing up for one hell of a party.” She gazed over at the picnic area where men and women laughed.

“It’s a little early, but we take joy where we can find it since no one knows what can happen tomorrow.” He straightened. “If we don’t celebrate the little things, what can we celebrate?”

“True.” She sidestepped him. “Enjoy the party. I need a shower.”

“You don’t plan to join us. You are part of our team too.” He cocked his head in her direction.

Her first day of work he was assigned jumper duty, and it had been a few days since she’d seen him. He’d stopped by her tent long enough to say goodbye and was gone.
